As an author, I envied the immediate feedback that teachers take for granted.
As an author, real time interaction with my audience was been both rare and precious. As a reader, I understand the power of the written word to move people and to influence their thinking. But I was rarely offered hard evidence that my writing had that kind of impact. People told me that I have affected their outlook, but I seldom had the opportunity to see those moments of clarity as they happened.
But as a teacher, I’ve been able to witness those moments, to see my words make an immediate impact on how a student views his/her world. I have also discovered the joy of helping students to succeed–whatever “success” means for them, in their own life and given their own needs and desires.
I am just getting started on my journey through this new profession, but I am looking forward to the ride.
